Cusco was the capital of the Inca empire and is now a lively mountain city of cobbled streets and colonial churches built on Inca stone walls. It is the starting point for the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.

At 3,400 meters, it is worth spending two days here to adjust to the altitude before any trekking. The dry season runs from May to September.
